Student Scientists Learn, Connect at 2019 National Biodiesel Conference

The Class of 2019

Many university-level science majors interested in learning about all aspects of the biodiesel industry received travel scholarships to attend the 2019 National Biodiesel Conference & Expo in San Diego. Schools represented included Purdue University, Louisiana State University, and the University of California Riverside.

A Student-Led Breakout Session

Some of the students, who are members of the Next Generation Scientists for Biodiesel, also received invitations to present on their research during a breakout session and poster session.

“I feel like I am able to share the ideas and numbers behind this industry more clearly and more confidently,” said Kelly Martichuski, studying Bioproduct and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota. “There is still a lot of research that can be carried out, so I am hoping that with all of the knowledge that I gained, I can come up with new research ideas and get results to bring awareness to the population about the great benefits of using biodiesel.”

“Attending the West Coast Carbon Market session was very interesting and eye opening as I didn’t realize how important these government agencies on the West Coast thought biodiesel was,” said Cavan McCaffery, a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of California, Riverside. “They are trying very hard to push for biodiesel and put these carbon reducing plans into action. Hopefully I will be able to work with CARB in the near future, testing the emissions of trucks using biodiesel…and show that not only is it good for the engine but also great for reducing the amount of emissions in the atmosphere.”

“Conference Central”

“I have fulfilled my dream of presenting my research in Poster and Breakout session as an Indian biodiesel research representative,” said Santhosh Poojary, a Biotechnology Engineering student from NMAM Institute of Technology- Nitte, India. “Industry conferences provide a great opportunity for network; hence future collaboration is expected by networking. Words are limited to express my gratitude.”
